SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable propagation

Ontario Plants is driving the future of a more resilient, productive, and sustainable food system.

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is inherently more sustainable, using less water and fewer pesticides and fertilizers than traditional farming. With high-tech, climate-controlled greenhouses, plants grow 24/7, 365 days a year, unaffected by weather conditions or climatic events.

Yields per acre are often higher, ensuring a steady supply of nutritious, flavorful food year-round for a growing population. Ontario Plants embraces the sustainability advantages of CEA while continuously seeking innovative, long-term solutions to further minimize its environmental impact.

Conserving, Filtering, and Recycling Rainwater

Ontario Plants prioritizes rainwater for irrigation, reducing energy-intensive water treatments. Rainwater from greenhouse rooftops is captured and stored in retention ponds, filtered, and aerated before entering the closed-loop irrigation system. This system protects local ecosystems from agricultural runoff.

Improving Energy Efficiency

Our greenhouses feature hybrid lighting systems that balance energy efficiency with growing performance. At Glencoe, light abatement screens and energy curtains further reduce energy consumption while optimizing the growing environment. Renewable energy, including a planned 6-acre solar panel installation (set for 2025), contributes to our sustainable operations. As new technologies emerge, Ontario Plants remains committed to continually improving energy efficiency.

Pest Management Planning

Ontario Plants employs high- tech pest control methods to ensure no pesticides are used, ensuring healthy plants. Insect netting prevents harmful insects from entering, while in-house entomologists monitor pest levels in accordance with our Pest Management Plan.
